Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the app need microphone access?

ViolinTuner uses your device's microphone to listen to your violin and detect the pitch of the strings. The audio is processed entirely on your device and is never recorded or stored.

What is Fifths Tuning mode?

Fifths Tuning mode lets you tune two adjacent strings at once by listening for the perfect fifth interval between them. This is how professional violinists tune — first the A string to a reference pitch, then each string pair (A-D, D-G, A-E) by fifths.

Why do the reference sounds sound like a real violin?

We use recordings of actual violin strings instead of synthetic beeps. This helps you match the tone quality, not just the pitch.

The tuner seems slightly off. Is it calibrated correctly?

ViolinTuner is calibrated for A4 = 440 Hz, the international standard. If your orchestra tunes to a different pitch (like A4 = 442 Hz), there may be a slight difference. The app includes calibration adjustments for each string based on extensive real-world testing.

Can I use this app for other instruments?

ViolinTuner is optimized specifically for violin frequencies and the four violin strings (G, D, A, E). While it may pick up other instruments, it's designed to work best with violin.
